Pre-anesthetic blood screening tests for organ function, blood counts and clotting factors of your pet. This is important because it helps to ensure the safety of your pet during surgery. Blood testing is one of the best methods to identify medical conditions not able to be identified through history and examination. Additionally, this test helps let the veterinarians know that your pet will be able to heal after surgery.
Absolutely! Just as humans have special needs as they get older so does your pet. In fact, your pet ages more rapidly than a human does and depending on their breed can be considered a senior between the ages of 5 and 7 years old. As pets age, organ systems often begin to fail, possibly due to factors such as genetics or environment. Blood tests provide a detailed look at your pet’s health from the inside. In addition, changes in senior pet diet, exercise, and routine medical care is very important to their overall health.
You brush your teeth every day, right? Just like you, your pets have tartar and staining on their teeth that can contain bacteria. If left untreated, this bacteria can caused many different health problems like heart disease, live disease, and kidney failure not to mention premature periodontal disease. Dental care is very important, and pets need dental care too.
Heartworms are blood parasites that come from mosquito bites. So all dogs (indoor and outdoor) are at risk. In order for your pet to be protected, annual heartworm testing is recommended, as well as a monthly preventative regime. The staff at CAH is happy to speak with you about the various types of preventative available. And yes, cats can get heartworms too, and also need protection.
Yes. It is recommended that your pet receive an annual examination. Senior pets may need to receive biannual examinations due to their special needs as a result of their quick aging process. These examinations help to detect problems as early as possible so they can be addressed and treated before becoming more serious health issues.
Yes, in fact Companion Animal Hospital has separate boarding areas for both cats and dogs. Pets will need to be current and up-to-date with their vaccinations.
Remember…Protection = Prevention!! To help protect your dog from this potentially fatal disease, vaccination is key. The bacteria can survive for long periods of time in water, wet soil, and infected urine. Pets can be infected by drinking, swimming in or walking through contaminated water. Bacteria can enter the bloodstream through a cut in the skin or through mucous membranes (such as eyes, nose or mouth). By vaccinating your dog before exposure to this disease, you may avoid the emotional and financial trauma of dealing with this disease.
